CSV Explorer

See a CSV file's columns, types, missing values and first rows, with a chart for any column.

Explore a CSV file in Python

The same first look in plain pandas, to use on your own files.

import pandas as pd
from io import StringIO

csv_text = """name,city,marks
Asha,Chennai,91
Ben,Mumbai,
Chen,Chennai,78
"""
df = pd.read_csv(StringIO(csv_text))   # pd.read_csv("file.csv") for a real file

print(df.shape)            # rows, columns
print(df.dtypes) # the type pandas chose for each column
print(df.isna().sum()) # missing values per column
print(df["marks"].mean()) # missing values are skipped
print(df["city"].value_counts())

Go further with pandas for beginners, cleaning data and Python's csv module.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read on your own computer and never sent to a server, so it is fine for data you are not allowed to share.

How big a CSV file can it open?

Up to 25 MB. Larger files are better handled in the editor with pd.read_csv(..., usecols=[...]) or chunksize, which read only what you need.

My file uses semicolons or tabs. Does that work?

Yes. The explorer detects commas, semicolons, tabs and pipes, and files saved in older Excel encodings, and the pandas code it shows includes the sep and encoding it used.

Can I keep working on the data in Python?

"Open in the editor" copies the file into the editor's Files panel and opens the pandas code from this page, so you can filter, group and plot from there.
